Amid the freezing cold and snowy conditions at Takhti Stadium in Tehran, Pakistan finally recorded their first win in a AFC U19 Championship qualifier after three events when they edged past eternal rivals India 2-1 yesterday, 8 November 2011.
The Group ‘C’ clash between the two sides for the 2012 AFC U19 Championship qualifiers was for nothing but pride after Pakistan and India failed to finish in top 2 spots that would have guaranteed a spot in next year’s main championship. Bilawal-ur-Rehman was the hero for Pakistan as he scored twice.
In the first half, both sides found hard to adjust to the slushy ground conditions. But Pakistan dug in and a brace from Bilawal-ur-Rehman helped them beat India 2-1. Bilawal scored his first when he headed it home in the 32nd minute, and then in the 43rd minute, he scored off a direct free-kick from outside the box.
Changing over, India pulled one back in the 55th minute when Johnnychand Singh blasted home an Anto Xavier cross from the left.
The Indians pressed hard thereafter but stayed guilty of muffing from close on three occasions – Pronoy Halder, Holicharan Narzary and Johnnychand failing to place it in with the rival goalkeeper Saqib Hanif at their mercy.
Overall, the discipline in defence and midfield which had made India stand out among all teams stayed missing in the first half and Pakistan were fast to capitalise. Pakistan too would have been cursing themselves for not taking their own chances in that game that could have decided the match much earlier.
The result left India and Pakistan both finish on 3 points from 4 games, although India finished above Pakistan in 3rd place courtesy of better goal difference. In the final group game, hosts Iran beat Uzbekistan 2-0 to top the standings.
