Tehran: Qualifying Group C hosts comfortably booked their ticket to the 2012 AFC U-19 Championship on Sunday with a 5-0 hammering of Pakistan guaranteed them a top-two finished with one round of matches left to play.
Uzbekistan also made it three-out-of-three to secure their passage but they were made to work significantly harder than Iran with the Central Asians needing to come from a goal down in their hard-fought 2-1 victory over Turkmenistan.
Having already beaten India 3-0 and Turkmenistan 4-0, Iran had built up momentum going into Sunday’s match against a Pakistan that had lost their first three qualifiers.
And the Group C hosts needed just three minutes to open the scoring through Ahmad Eskandari before the Iranians went 3-0 with less than 20 minutes gone with Alireza Jirandeh adding the second with a 14th minute penalty and Behnam Barzay netting a third five minutes later.
Pakistan held out until just before the hour mark when Jirandeh scored his second of the game before Amir Reza Zare claimed Iran’s fifth and final goal with two minutes remaining.
In the earlier match at the Takhti Stadium substitute Jahongir Abdumuminov scored a late winner as Uzbekistan came from behind to defeat Turkmenistan 2-1 to assure themselves of a place in next year’s finals.
Orazberdi Myradov gave Turkmenistan the lead with five minutes of the first-half to play only for Abboshek Makhstaliev to cancel out the Turkmen midfielder’s opener three minutes after the interval.
With the hard-fought encounter heading towards a 1-1 draw forward Abdumuminov, who came on at the start of the second half as a replacement for midfielder Jamshid Iskanderov, struck in the 81st minute to give the Uzbeks the crucial victory.
Pakistan now face India in their last match on 8 November 2011 at Takhti Stadium with 1700 PST kick-off.
