‘Road to Anfield’ event set for March [Express Tribune]

KARACHI: Football fans and Liverpool FC enthusiasts will be given a chance to showcase their skills at Anfield — the home of the renowned English football club.

The opportunity will be presented through the ‘Road to Anfield 2014’ five-a-side competition, which is scheduled to take place in the first week of March. The Standard Chartered Bank (SCB), sponsors of Liverpool FC, will be hosting the event.

Details of the competition were announced at the bank’s head office in Karachi on Tuesday.

As many as 29 teams will compete from March 1-8 to secure their berth to Anfield. The cities of Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad will play host to the tournament.

The winner of the event will join the 14-team competition at Anfield in May, which will feature teams from a number of countries.

Besides this, the Pakistan outfit will get a chance to attend an English Premier League match at the stadium, while they will also be given the opportunity to attend a training session at the Liverpool FC Academy.

According to Head of Consumer Banking SCB, the idea behind this event was to promote the sport in the country.

“It’s the first step in raising awareness concerning this global sport,” Naseer Hasan told reporters.

“This programme will be followed by similar events in which our local talent can encouraged to aim for more.”
