Waleed Sherdil imposing presence in goal inspired The City School – PAF Chapter to a thrilling win over defending champions Nixor College in the final of the 8th HBL Karachi United Schools Championship 2013.
The final held on Pakistan Day, 23 March 2013, at Baloch Mujahid Stadium in Ibrahim Hyderi, Karachi was broadcast live on PTV Sports. City School PAF held their nerve to be crowned KUSC champions for the first time after a 7-6 penalty shoot-out result.
Earlier in the day, Aga Khan Higher Secondary School got 3rd position after beating fellow losing semi-finalists Southshore 5-2. A brace each from Yasir Shah and Sarmad Jamil and a goal from Abdul Wahid for AKHSS proved too much for Southshore who could only respond from Momin Aamir and Shahzeb.
Nixor College dominated much of the game, but City School PAF goalkeeper Waleed Sherdil proved to unbreachable. The game finished 0-0 at the end of both normal and extra-time periods.
In penalties, Waleed Sherdil stopped 3 crucial penalties as Muhammad Afridi, Shahmir, Haider, Zain, Waleed Sherdil, Fahad, and Atta scored for City School PAF from their tries. Nixor College could only respond with Mehmood, Riyan Pervez, Abdullah, Khizar, Sohaib Afridi, and Muzammil Hussain. City School PAF won the sudden death shoot-out 7-6 in the end much to the jubiliations of their supporters.
Referees were Saleem Faiz, Saleemuddin Babar, Farrukh Riaz, Babar Khan, M Anwar and match commissioner Khalid Majeed.
The KUSC final was attended by KRL head coach, former national team & PIA coach, and FIFA instructor Tariq Lutfi. He met both finalists at half time.
Joining him were NBP head coach Syed Nasir Ismail, DFA South president Gulab Baloch, DFA East vice president Syed Usman Shah, DFA Malir vice president Master Ghulam Rasool, DFA Central vice president M Shamim, organising secretary Riaz Ahmed et al.
City School PAF goalkeeper Waleed Sherdil was given Player of the Tournament award, AKHSS striker Yasir Shah got Golden Boot award for his 18 goals, and Peoples Choice Award was given to Southshore’s Momin Aamir.
Tariq Lutfi gave KUSC winners trophy to City School PAF captain Naveed Lone, runners up trophy to Nixor College captain Muzammil Farishta, and 3rd place trophy to Aga Khan Higher Secondary School’s Yasir Shah alongwith gold, silver, and bronze medals.
