Muslim FC hold Navy to draw

KARACHI: Chaman’s Muslim FC held Navy to a goalless draw, while minnows Baloch FC also stunned Habib Bank Limited (HBL) with a 1-1 draw in the 9th Pakistan Premier Football League here on Monday. At the KPT Stadium, the match between Navy and Muslim FC turned out to be a tough contest with both sides making concerted efforts to get an upper hand.

In the initial few minutes, Muslim FC could have scored at least three goals, but their forwards failed to capitalise on the opportunities, leaving the management in utter distress.

“Yes, our boys started with great pace and created a few good chances but unluckily failed to convert them,” Muslim FC coach Mohammad Dawood told ‘The News’ after the match. “We finished fifth last season and this time we are going good but the draws seem to affect our points. Our target is to wrap up the league in the top three or four,” Dawood said.

After a goalless first half, it was expected that Navy, who hold the National Challenge Cup, would play in positive mood and they did that by launching a few nice rallies from both wings, exerting pressure on the visitors.

Muslim FC, mostly carrying young blood in their side with good height, did a marvelous job in the defence as they averted a few nasty rallies from the hosts. In the last few minutes, Navy got a couple of open net chances but due to hasty approach of their strikers failed to score.

The single point inflated Muslim FC’s tally to 13 points from eight games, while Navy also moved to 13 points from 10 meetings.

Nushki’s Baloch FC got a crucial point after holding struggling HBL here at the People’s Sports Complex. Habib Bank, who with the draw moved to four points from eight games, got the lead through Abdullah in the 40th minute. Baloch FC, termed underdogs, brought an equaliser through Zubair Ahmad in the 82nd minute. HBL coach Yousuf Khan was shocked by the result. “I am really upset. We could have won it by six goals had we not missed so many easy chances,” Yousuf said.

“We dominated the show by creating so many opportunities, but our rivals got one chance and converted that,” he lamented. “It was a match which we should have won and the result has left me shell-shocked, not knowing what to do,” Yousuf conceded.

The single point inflated Baloch FC’s points to six from seven meetings.

At the Railways Stadium in Lahore, Wohaib Club also held Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) to a goalless draw. With the output Wohaib Club, who have not been impressive so far after returning to the top league after four years, moved to two points from four matches while debutants ZTBL stretched their tally to three points after five appearances.

Today’s fixtures: KESC v Afghan FC (Peoples Sports Complex, Karachi), PMC v PAF (PMC Ground, Faisalabad).
