Pak women team off to Colombo

KARACHI: An 18-member Pakistan women football team will leave for Colombo on Wednesday (tomorrow) from here to feature in the 2nd South Asian Women Football Championship to be held at the Ceylonese Rugby and Football Club Grounds in the Sri Lankan capital from September 7-16.

Pakistan have been placed in Group B with Nepal, Afghanistan and Maldives, while India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Bhutan have been bracketed in Group A.

Pakistan, under the coaching of Mohammad Rasheed, will face Nepal in their opener on September 8, followed by their games against Afghanistan on September 10 and Maldives on September 12.

Two top teams from each group will make it to the semifinals to be held on September 14. The final will be conducted on September 16. Pakistan reached the semifinals stage in the previous edition of the tournament under coach Tariq Lutfi in Dhaka.

The managers meeting will be held on September 6. The opening ceremony is scheduled for 1:30pm PST on September 7 and the game between Sri Lanka and Bhutan will take place soon after the ceremony. But the opening match of the championship will take place at 7:30am PST on the same day between India and Bangladesh.

Uzma Zaidi is manager, Miss Gul physiotherapist and Kiran Ilyas assistant coach. The team will arrive here from Lahore on Wednesday (tomorrow) to board Colombo-bound aircraft.
