LAHORE: Pakistan men’s national football team is set to return to international action next month after confirming participation in a four-nation tournament in the Maldives.
Titled the Independence Cup, the competition is scheduled to run from June 1 to 10 as part of the host nation’s Independence Day celebrations, providing the Green Shirts a vital platform to recalibrate after their recent continental campaign.
The tournament will feature a familiar lineup of South Asian rivals, with Pakistan joining the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and a Bangladesh U23 side.
For the Pakistan coaching staff, the event serves as a strategic testing ground to assess squad depth and refine tactical combinations against regional opposition ahead of upcoming South Asian assignments.
Pakistan enters this window on the heels of a challenging AFC Asian Cup qualifying journey. Although they concluded their campaign on a high note with a 2-1 victory over Myanmar at the Jinnah Sports Stadium in Islamabad, the result was bittersweet.
