ISLAMABAD: The government has raised serious concerns over the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF)’s failure to conduct a long-pending financial audit of the Normalization Committee (NC), urging immediate scrutiny of funds provided by FIFA over the past several years.
The issue came to the fore during a high-level meeting when PFF President Mohsin Gilani called on Secretary Inter-Provincial Coordination (IPC) Mohyuddin Ahmad Wani. Speaking later, Gilani confirmed that the federation is keen to ensure a comprehensive audit of the FIFA grants disbursed to the NC during its four to five-year tenure.
“We are already in correspondence with FIFA on the matter, but in light of the government’s concerns, we will further intensify our efforts,” Gilani said. “A fresh request will be made to FIFA, seeking a detailed audit of all funds allocated for football development in Pakistan during the NC period.”
Gilani clarified that all financial dealings during the NC tenure were handled directly between FIFA and the committee, leaving the elected PFF administration with no access to relevant documentation. “FIFA holds complete records of the transactions. Our role is limited to pursuing transparency through formal channels,” he added.
The PFF chief also met Director General of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB), Yasir Peerzada. Sources revealed that government officials expressed unease over the continued delay, stressing that funds allocated for the promotion of football must undergo a credible and independent audit process. “Public interest demands that every penny spent during the NC tenure be accounted for transparently,” an official maintained.
Concerns were further compounded by what officials described as a contradiction in PFF’s stance, claiming no access to NC financial records while simultaneously accommodating a former NC official in a key position within the current setup.
The government also reiterated its legal authority to audit national sports federations, drawing parallels with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), which undergoes regular financial scrutiny despite receiving substantial funding from international bodies.
Beyond financial matters, the meeting also focused on reviving football activities across the country. Secretary IPC emphasized the need for year-round competitions at various age-group levels to ensure sustainable development of the sport.
“Consistent football activity, across all tiers, is essential for rebuilding the game’s structure in Pakistan,” Wani noted, while assuring full governmental support for initiatives aimed at revitalizing football. The IPC Ministry and PSB reaffirmed their commitment to extend all possible assistance to the PFF, signaling a collaborative push to restore transparency, accountability, and growth in Pakistan’s football landscape.
