How has the experience in Bangladesh been?
Abdullah Shah: First of all, we recently joined the Bangladesh Premier League — Brothers Union FC, which is a first-tier club. During Ramadan we played three matches for them before their international break. It’s a really good exposure opportunity because we don’t have a league like that in Pakistan, so we get very little game time. In football, you know, you have to perform on the pitch, and game time is crucial for that. So this gave us a lot of exposure, and we also represented Pakistan’s name well there — especially since Pakistan-Bangladesh relations have improved after thirty to forty years. We went there for that reason, and Pakistan’s name came up quite positively.
Alamgir Ghazi: It was a great experience overall, and most importantly we got matches — which we don’t get enough of here. Playing and performing as local players in a foreign league was a great experience, and going forward we hope more local players go there, get matches, play, get exposure — so that when they come to international matches they’re relaxed, no pressure. That’s the key: go and play in leagues.
Why couldn’t more of our players go — is it a matter of calibre, or do you think our players aren’t yet ready for a league of that level? Because Bangladesh’s league isn’t exactly a top-tier league either.
Alamgir Ghazi: Look, I’ll say it plainly — the league isn’t at the level of European leagues, but I’m saying our players don’t have the calibre where instead of six going to Bangladesh, twelve or fifteen could have gone. We went on the SAFF quota — the quota for SAFF countries — and the foreigners’ quota allows five players, whom they prefer to be European. Under the SAFF quota, three are allowed, so the six that went had already played twenty-plus international matches and had league experience. In South Asia, it’s the second-best league after the Indian Super League — Europeans and South Americans come to play there — so it’s a comparatively strong league.
Abdullah Shah: Beyond that, our players are also playing in leagues in Maldives and Bhutan. Our national team players are all performing in different leagues across South Asia.
How much more work will it take for us to qualify?
Alamgir Ghazi: Look, first and most importantly, the league is what matters. If your domestic structure is strong and we get better camps, that’s how progress happens. But frankly, after many problems, we’ve only just started — this is the first year of this tenure. It’ll take a little time. But the sooner we get domestic matches, the sooner a domestic league starts, the better all our local players will perform. It’s commonly said in football: if you stand still for one year, you go ten years backwards. Pakistan football was officially absent for a full decade — a complete decade where football didn’t happen. Think about it — we’re a hundred years behind. Now we want to run and cover that gap.
Since we’re talking about leagues — foreign leagues — what’s your wish regarding a league in Pakistan itself?
Abdullah Shah: Definitely, we need a league. Players need as many regular matches as possible, the more players fit for matches the more support they’ll get. Our one wish is that a league happens as soon as possible — the same way we went to Bangladesh and played alongside foreign players, South Asian players, Europeans — those foreign players should come here too. Because the more you play your home-grown players alongside Europeans, the better both sides get.
Alamgir Ghazi: A good professional league where players benefit and everyone benefits overall — that’s the goal: a proper pro league.
You mentioned earlier that you played for Pakistan Under-14 in 2015, after which Pakistani football was banned for ten years. Your golden period was lost. Now you’re 24 — how much did that setback affect you?
Abdullah Shah: I played for Pakistan Under-14 in 2015, then for ten years Pakistani football was in suspension. We couldn’t play. My golden era, my golden period — I’m 24 now — that gap where our football went missing was a massive setback for us in South Asia too. But Alhamdulillah, after 2022 our football came back. We made our senior team debut, made a good impact across international media, in the World Cup Qualifiers too, and in the qualification cup we’ve held Afghanistan to two draws. Inshallah we’ll keep performing like this.
There’s a match against Myanmar — opportunity only comes once. How have you prepared, what goals have you set, what mistakes have you worked on?
Alamgir Ghazi: Look, the boys are very focused, and it’s a great opportunity for them to prove themselves — because a lot of senior players are resting, diaspora players who used to play with us are also resting. So these boys have a chance to prove themselves. The goal is simple: we fight. No extravagant goal — just play and fight till the end. We’ll miss our diaspora players, but even now our players are playing well. This is their opportunity to prove themselves. I’ve said it before — it’s a good platform to prove yourself and lock in your selection for upcoming competitions. I’d say it’s a good time, nothing to stress about too much, and it’s a home match — so we want a good result.
Tell us about talent from Chitral — is there football talent in Pakistan?
Alamgir Ghazi: Look, the talent is there, but the facilities aren’t quite there for them. In Chitral, the natural talent exists — they’ll come — but they also need the facilities to pursue it further. Most of our people come to cities for universities or colleges and keep playing football there, and they improve. But that’s not enough. They need proper academies, proper grassroots development from the start. I believe across Balochistan, Chitral, Peshawar, KPK — wherever you look — there’s plenty of talent, but they need a proper structure to improve.
We’re a one-sport nation — we follow cricket. Do you feel left out, that football should also have its place in Pakistan?
Abdullah Shah: Look, before 2022, if someone asked me whether football had any scope, I’d have said no. But after 2022 and winning the World Cup Qualifier, Alhamdulillah — the fame we got was a massive boost for us. For the younger generation deciding whether to pursue football — after 2022, the crowd attendance at even normal matches has been massive. We got incredible support, and Alhamdulillah, Pakistani football has earned recognition.
You mentioned a domestic league — do you think we need a national league so that talent from across Pakistan comes forward, and new talent gets inspired watching you play?
Abdullah Shah: Absolutely, that’s exactly the league we’re talking about. At the domestic level, a league where we can play matches week in, week out, regularly — a proper development phase with a proper league structure, the way it’s happening in Bangladesh, India, Bhutan, everywhere. That’s the kind of league we need.
Alamgir Ghazi: A professional league where foreign coaches come, foreign players come, everyone plays together and we learn from each other. A proper professional league — that’s what’s needed. Very much so.
