LAHORE: The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has shifted its focus toward FIFA to promote football and develop international-standard infrastructure in the country.
Speaking at a media briefing, PFF President Syed Mohsen Gilani said that before approaching the government for stadium construction, the federation will seek FIFA’s support to bring foreign investment into Pakistan. “Instead of burdening the government, our aim is to attract international resources to uplift football infrastructure,” he remarked.
Gilani revealed that two mini-pitches have already arrived in Pakistan and will be installed in Islamabad and Lahore, while the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) will provide two additional training pitches. He noted that Jinnah Stadium currently fails to meet AFC regulations, requiring significant funds for upgrades.
Under the stadium construction program, the PFF will strive to have FIFA build its first dedicated stadium in Pakistan, stressing that without international-standard venues, hosting matches remains a challenge.
Outlining future plans, Gilani announced that the PFF intends to organize district, provincial, and national leagues, including a women’s league. He expressed a desire to launch a domestic football league, inspired by the success of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), though he admitted Pakistan faces severe infrastructure shortages and limited resources. The duration of the league, he added, will depend on available facilities.
Gilani also highlighted collaborations with UN Youth and the Prime Minister’s Youth Program, using football as a tool for youth mental health. The “Football for Schools” initiative will scout talent at the school level, with over a thousand footballs to be distributed nationwide.
He praised FIFA’s global program to build stadiums in countries lacking infrastructure and expressed hope that Pakistan would benefit.
