LAHORE – Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) President Syed Mohsen Gilani has declared the launch of the Pakistan Football League as a top priority, announcing that the prestigious competition will make its return in a “new, modern and fully professional structure” as part of a broader revival plan for the country’s football ecosystem.
Speaking exclusively at the District Football Championship final, Gilani revealed that the federation has already received a strong and promising response to its official Letter of Intent (LOI) for the league.
“We have invited expressions of interest and received an encouraging number of proposals from groups determined to deliver a new and improved league system,” Gilani said. “As a fresh leadership, we are building something stronger and more sustainable. This league will not be rushed, it will be done the right way.”
In a powerful appeal, the PFF chief urged government departments and institutions to restart their sports units, calling them vital to football’s survival in Pakistan.
“Footballers need employment security. Departments historically kept this sport alive. I once again urge departmental heads, and especially the Prime Minister, to revive departmental football. It is essential for the future of our players.” Gilani stressed that job security and athlete welfare are at the heart of the PFF’s reforms.
Terming Lahore the “nursery of Pakistani football,” Gilani rescinded commitment to creating continuous playing opportunities across the country. “Lahore has always been a sporting hub. We want leagues, matches and football activity at every level. Amir Dogar represents the kind of dedication we need across Pakistan. Grassroots development is our foundation.”
Gilani also confirmed that the PFF General Secretary’s appointment is in final stages.“Candidates have been shortlisted. We want the best for Pakistan football.”
On international competition, he said strategic planning with FIFA and AFC is already underway, hinting at steps toward an international league structure next year.
Meanwhile, Baba Football Club lifted the District Football Championship trophy, defeating Fame Sports Club in a gripping penalty shootout.
The final under floodlights at Fame Football Ground remained goalless in regulation time, with both sides showcasing solid defensive discipline. Baba FC eventually clinched victory 5–4 on penalties, holding their nerve under pressure.
Gilani attended as chief guest and distributed trophies and medals. The ceremony was also graced by PFF Senior Vice President Hafiz Zaka Ullah, Punjab FA President Naveed Aslam Lodhi, DFA Lahore President Zia Arif Dogar, and former NC member Shahid Khokhar.
PFF Vice President Hafiz Zaka Ullah confirmed negotiations with departments for team restoration are underway, while Lodhi announced that the Punjab FA Congress meeting will take place later this month, followed by the release of the annual calendar.
