TANGERANG (Indonesia): The Pakistan women’s national football team ended their participation in the 2026 AFC Women’s Asian Cup qualifiers with a 2-1 victory against Kyrgyzstan on Saturday here at the Sport Centre Kelapa Dua Stadium.
While the win provided a positive conclusion as the team finished second in their group, it did not secure advancement for Pakistan. Chinese Taipei claimed the group’s sole qualification spot by defeating hosts Indonesia 2-1 later on Saturday, finishing with a perfect record.
This campaign marked Pakistan’s first appearance in this qualifying tournament.
Drawn into Group ‘D’ alongside Chinese Taipei, Indonesia and Kyrgyzstan for the Jakarta-based fixtures, the team faced a challenging start on June 29th, losing 8-0 to table toppers Chinese Taipei.
They showed strong character to rebound earlier this week, earning a solid 2-0 win over Indonesia.
Saturday’s match against Kyrgyzstan began brightly for Pakistan. Striker Mariam Mahmood scored her maiden international goal within the opening minute.
The chance came after Layla Aliya pressured near the halfway line and played a pass into the area. Kyrgyz goalkeeper Dilnura Abibulla initially seemed to gather it but fumbled, allowing Mariam to tap into the empty net.
Mariam doubled Pakistan’s lead in the 18th minute, converting a penalty kick confidently.
Kyrgyzstan reduced the deficit in the 69th minute through Alina Gaparova, who found the bottom corner with a low shot. Pakistan managed the remaining time effectively to secure the 2-1 result, finishing their group stage with six points.
The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) acknowledged the team’s effort in their debut at this level.
“For the first time in history, Pakistan took part in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Qualifiers,” the PFF stated. “After a tough start against Chinese Taipei, the team bounced back with incredible determination and heart, securing back-to-back victories. With these wins, they’ve written a new chapter in Pakistan’s football journey.”
Describing the overall performance as “a moment of pride for every supporter of the game,” the PFF congratulated the players, coaching staff and officials.
