KARACHI: Mohammad Usman’s lone strike helped PMC Athletico Faisalabad pull off a big upset when they defeated star-studded National Bank 1-0 in the 9th Pakistan Premier Football League here on Tuesday, 18 Dec 2012.
In other games here, Pakistan Air Force (PAF) overwhelmed Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) 2-0, while Navy whipped Lahore’s Wohaib FC 4-0 in a one-sided affair.
Here at the KPT Stadium, midfielder Usman produced a beautiful goal in the 57th minute to guide PMC Athletico to a vital win over formidable National Bank, which helped them stretch their points tally to 20 from 22 meetings.
National Bank, carrying a bunch of international players, could have scored twice in the first half, but once Farooq Shah’s pile-driver hit the post and then Mohammad Asif’s drive crashed the post.
The loss left National Bank at 31 points from 24 appearances.
“We are doing everything except scoring goals,” National Bank coach Nasir Ismail told ‘The News’. “Luck is not favouring us as two shots collided with the post, while one crashed the bar in the initial few minutes,” said Nasir.
“We are reaching the goal and managing shoots but they don’t go to the nets. Luck is 110 percent against us,” the dejected coach said.
PMC Athletico’s defender Waqas Ahmed was declared the best player of the show as he did a splendid job in the deep.
Here at the Korangi Baloch Football Ground in Sharafi Goth, PAF rose to the second spot when they outgunned PIA with an enviable ease.
Young striker Mansoor Khan, who had played a key role in Pakistan’s title triumph in the SAFF Under-16 Championship in Nepal last year, put PAF ahead in the 38th minute. At half time, the visitors were leading 1-0.
After the breather PIA showed some sparks on the field, inflicting a few forceful rallies but again it were PAF who scored, this time through Mohammad Zeeshan in the 84th minute.
With the victory PAF moved to 53 points from 27 meetings, while PIA are struggling at 21 points from 22 appearances.
At the Naval Sports Complex, Karsaz, Navy recorded their seventh victory from 25 games when they outgunned Wohaib Club comfortably to move to 29 points from 25 matches.
After a goalless first half, Navy opted for aggressive display, scoring four goals inside 36 minutes. They went ahead in the 50th minute through Bilal Junior before Mohtashim Ali doubled their lead in the 62nd minute.
They kept up pressure on their rivals and eight minutes latter added to the visitors’ misery with a 70th minute strike by striker Adnan. Four minutes from time defender Mohammad Ramzan netted a fine goal for the hosts to complete the rout.
The loss left Wohaib FC reeling at just eight points from 22 outings. Wohaib FC, owned by former PFF secretary Hafiz Salman Butt, are going towards relegation.
Today’s fixtures: HBL v ZTBL (Peoples Sports Complex, Karachi), KESC v KPT (KPT Stadium, Karachi).
