KARACHI: Muslim FC broke the undefeated run of holders Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) by defeating them 1-0 in the 9th Pakistan Premier Football League on Monday, while Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) pushed Wohaib FC to the brink of relegation by whipping them 5-0.
At the Government High School Ground in Chaman, KRL, who are in strong position to lift their third straight crown, finally succumbed to a strong Muslim FC from Chaman.
Muslim FC, who have emerged as a strong side this season, struck their winner through Mohammad Dawood in the 43rd minute to stretch their points to 50 from 26 games.
“In the meeting on Sunday night I told my boys that their morale looked a bit down and that was the reason why we went down,” KRL coach Tariq Lutfi told ‘The News’ from Chaman.
“There was a big crowd and it is usually not easy to play in such conditions. But I am also not satisfied with the refereeing standard. On quite a few occasions we had to suffer at the hands of the referee, who was an experienced person,” Tariq said.
“But the defeat will awaken our side and will make them realise that they will have to be steadfast in approach and every game will have to be taken quite seriously,” said Lutfi, a former Pakistan coach.
The KRL are still way ahead of the others with 58 points from 23 matches.
Last year, KRL were beaten by Chaman’s Afghan FC, the only defeat that the country’s strongest team had tasted that season.
Meanwhile, here at the KPT Stadium, Chitral-born striker Mohammad Rasool scored another hat-trick as KESC thrashed the bottom-placed Wohaib FC with an enviable ease to inflate their points to 51 from 22 meetings.
Wohaib FC, who tasted their 19th defeat from 25 games, have almost been relegated to the second division.
Raool, who has been prolific this season despite fitness problems, scored goals in the fourth, 86th and 90th minute.
He was joined on the scoresheet by Abdul Salam and Abdul Rehman who contributed in the 25th and 51st minutes.
In another clash of the day here at the People’s Sports Complex, Punjab Medical College (PMC) FC held Habib Bank to a goalless draw.
The output helped Faisalabad’s PMC Athletico move to 22 points from 26 meetings, while the single point catapulted Habib Bank to 21 points from 24 appearances.
On Tuesday (today), Karachi Port Trust (KPT) face Zarai Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) here at the KPT Stadium.
