KARACHI: Leaders Karachi Electric Supply Company (KESC) were surprised by PMC Athletico with a 1-1 draw in the 9th Pakistan Premier Football League on Thursday.
The match between National Bank and four-time former champions WAPDA also ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
At the PMC Ground in Faisalabad, PMC struck an equaliser in the 87th minute through Waqas Ahmad to hold KESC who had taken the lead through Mohammad Rasool in the 74th minute when he guided a fine cross from Mohammad Moosa.
KESC were missing their skipper Mohammad Essa who is nursing a knee injury which he developed during the match against Habib Bank here at the People’s Sports Complex last week. PMC goalkeeper Basit Ghafoor was declared the best player, while the hosts’ Waqas Ahmad was adjudged the best scorer.
Essa, who watched his team’s game, blamed poor refereeing for the result. “I think the referee acted poorly and the last corner he gave to PMC on which they scored the goal was totally wrong,” Essa told ‘The News’.
Essa said his injury would take a few more days to heal.
Rasool also got injured in that game when he was hit by Habib Bank goalkeeper with his knee. The collision left the striker unconscious for around 25 minutes.
However, Essa said that Rasool looked fit against PMC and should have been included in the Pakistan team for the series against Palestine.
The single point inflated KESC’s tally to 22 from 10 matches, while PMC moved to six points from seven appearances.
At the Railways Stadium in Lahore, the match between WAPDA and National Bank turned out to be an action-packed affair. National Bank got onto the scoresheet through skipper Abdul Aziz in the 23rd minute. However, WAPDA fought back in the game when the referee awarded a controversial penalty to them on which skipper Arif Mehmood leveled the show with a fine conversion.
National Bank coach Nasir Ismail was not satisfied with the performance of his frontline. “We again failed to score goals,” Nasir told this correspondent. “Unless the players play selflessly our team will be in trouble. They should not be selfish and instead play for the team,” he said.
“We are also facing fitness problems. Aadil had made a recovery but he left the team again after suffering from viral infection and the same is the case with Attiqullah who had recovered from injury but has now been attacked by malaria. Aziz is also not in good mood because of the condition of his ailing father,” Nasir revealed.
WAPDA moved to 15 points from eight meetings, while National Bank, running at number two, advanced to 19 points from 11 matches.
Today’s fixtures: ZTBL v Baloch FC (Jinnah Stadium, Islamabad), PAF v Muslim FC (PAF Complex Ground, Peshawar), Wohaib Club v KPT (UMT Football Ground, Lahore).
