Army jump to 3rd in PPFL 2012

KARACHI: Former champions Army jumped to the third place after beating Chaman’s Muslim FC 2-0 in the 9th Pakistan Premier Football League on Wednesday, while PMC Athletico produced their first victory of the season by overwhelming Karachi Port Trust (KPT) 3-0.

In another game, the injury-infested Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) did a fine job by holding four-time former champions WAPDA to a 1-1 draw.

At the Army Stadium in Rawalpindi, Army, led by Jaffar Khan, showed great improvement and played with good rhythm to defeat Muslim FC, who before this game had shown remarkable results against departmental sides.

Ansar Abbas continued to impress with his splendid conversion rate putting soldiers ahead in the 20th minute. At half time, Army had 1-0 lead.

After the breather Muslim FC offered great resistance but Army struck again, this time on a penalty, as goalie Jaffar Khan made an easy goal from the spot in the dying moments. The victory brought Army to the third place, behind KESC and National Bank, with 21 points from 11 matches. This was the third defeat for Muslim FC who have 18 points from 13 appearances.

At the PMC Ground in Faisalabad, PMC Athletico, led by former Pakistan captain Haroon Yousuf, engineered their first triumph, overcoming KPT with an enviable ease.

Mohammad Usman put PMC Athletico on the front foot with a nice field effort in the 27th minute before defender Sufyan doubled their lead on the stroke of half time.

After the breather, PMC opted for defensive display, giving little room to the visitors to create opportunities.

The hosts added to the misery of KPT when they added to their tally through Haroon Yousuf who netted a goal just moments before the final whistle.

The win took PMC to nine points from 11 meetings while KPT trail at 15 points from 12 appearances.

KPT coach Mohammad Asif blamed poor refereeing for his team’s defeat. “You know here it becomes difficult for the visitors to perform as the refereeing standard in the game was too bad,” Asif told this correspondent.

At the Railways Stadium in Lahore, PIA came from one goal down to hold misfiring WAPDA to stretch their points tally to 15 from 11 games.

WAPDA got onto the scoresheet through Mohammad Ahmad in the 14th minute, but PIA bounced back in the 22nd minute through their key striker Shakir Lashari who had missed a few matches owing to an injury.

PIA coach Shamim Khan hailed his team’s effort. “The team played really well today,” Shamim told ‘The News’. “In the initial 75 minutes we were on top from every angle but in the last 20 to 25 minutes WAPDA put us in trouble with immense aggression but we were able to hold them,” the coach said.

By virtue of the single point WAPDA advanced to 17 points from 11 matches.

Today’s fixtures: PAF v Baloch FC (PAF Complex, Peshawar), ZTBL v Navy (Jinnah Stadium, Islamabad), KRL v HBL (Railways Stadium, Lahore), Wohaib Club v National Bank (UMT Ground, Lahore).
