PFF presidential election postponed till May 27 [The Nation]

LAHORE – The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has officially rescheduled its presidential election, moving the date from May 20 to May 27 due to logistical challenges encountered by observers from FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

An official notification issued by the PFF cited difficulties in coordinating international oversight as the primary reason for the delay. The elections, which will be held during the upcoming PFF Congress meeting, will include voting for both the President and the Executive Body.

The postponement comes amid rising geopolitical tensions between Pakistan and India, which have affected regional travel and disrupted arrangements for FIFA and AFC officials. Their presence is considered essential for ensuring transparency, credibility, and compliance with international standards, especially given Pakistan’s troubled history of football governance marked by internal conflicts and legal disputes.

Three candidates are confirmed to contest the PFF presidency: Syed Mohsen Gilani, Taha Alizai, and Zaka Ullah. This election represents a pivotal opportunity for Pakistan to usher in a new era of leadership, stability, and reform within its football structure.

Despite the one-week delay, PFF officials have reiterated that the Congress will proceed with the same agenda, underlining the vital role of international oversight in restoring integrity and order to the nation’s football administration.
